Do I Need to Register for VAT?
If your business generates more than £90,000 in taxable turnover over a 12-month period, you are legally required to register for VAT. Missing this deadline can result in penalties from HMRC.
Until your business is VAT-registered, you cannot add VAT to your invoices. Once registered, you are able to charge VAT on sales, services, hiring out goods, or commissions. At the same time, you can reclaim VAT on business-related purchases, which may reduce your overall costs if the VAT paid exceeds the VAT you collect from customers.
It’s important to note that your turnover is calculated on a rolling 12-month basis, not according to the calendar year. This means HMRC looks at any 12-month period to determine whether you have exceeded the registration threshold.
Voluntary VAT Registration
Even if your business turnover is below the £90,000 threshold, registering for VAT can still offer advantages, which is why some businesses opt for voluntary VAT registration.
If your turnover temporarily exceeds the threshold but you do not wish to register, you may be able to request an exemption from VAT registration. This involves writing to HMRC and explaining why your income is unlikely to exceed the VAT reregistration limit of £90,000.
Voluntary registration can allow you to reclaim VAT on business purchases and may improve your business credibility with clients and suppliers.
